The Only Good Opinions Are Anti-opinions
The worst thing about opinions is necessitating the existence of opinions
Insofar as anyone is capable of perceiving reality, there are certain things that people consider to be “facts” based on verification of information to the furthest extent possible, by way of the logic of how things work. My own existence, for instance, is a verifiable fact, whether any one person chooses to believe it or not. To say that “I exist” is not an expression of opinion, but a statement of fact.
If you don’t believe that I exist, then that is your opinion—and it is wrong. Whatever logic you’ve used to arrive at that conclusion can be proven wrong by anyone by verifying information that validates my existence. To say that “you are wrong to believe that I don’t exist,” however, would be an expression of opinion. While I may wish that everyone believed facts to be true, there is no way to objectively qualify what anyone “should” or “shouldn’t” think. There are many lines of logic one could propose for why one “should” believe facts, but there is no way of verifying what anyone “should’ve” done.
Nevertheless, I think these kinds of “anti-opinions” are worthwhile. No one should ever have to say anything like, “in my opinion, people should drink water if they want to live.” It is self-evident in the fact that you will seek it instinctively. However, if someone has the opinion “you do not need water to live,” it is worthwhile to have the counter-opinion that “no one should hold this belief, as it is in-factual.”
In this way, opinions have worth exclusively as a means of being used to counter the existence of opinions. Any opinion which is not an anti-opinion is a waste of time to such an extent as necessitating the existence of more opinions just to counter them. As such, in as many situations as possible, I would not encourage anyone to have opinions.
Keep in mind, as well, that “this was a good movie” is an opinion, but “I enjoyed this movie” (so long as you aren’t lying), is a statement of fact. Good luck and godspeed.
